Something like an explanation

About the Widow Meagher

I'm not sure where I first came across the story of The Widow Meagher's Oyster Parlor, but the idea of Edgar Allan Poe throwing back beers and oysters in a little dive by the waterfront struck a chord. The full story of the place is here, and although I'm of the opinion that it probably didn't exist, as least as described, I think it should have, so I'm resurrecting it here.

About me

I came to Baltimore for the water, and spent the first years of my residence working on boats down in the harbor. I spent a lot of time at the Maryland Room in the Enoch Pratt Library, reading stories about Charm City's past. Since then, I've written for Baltimore Magazine, I was a staff writer for the City Paper, and my articles have appeared in the Sun, the Washington Post, and a variety of other places.
Now I'm a freelance writer and editor and a sometimes college professor; and I'm still finding out new things about my adopted city. I started this site as an outlet for some of those things — the trivia, ephemera, and Baltimoreana that I've accumulated over the years. Things that haven't quite risen to the level of full-blown stories, but that I find interesting all the same. Feel free to check out my other writing at www.chrislanders.net, and I welcome any comments, questions, or ideas at thewidowmeagher@gmail.com.
Thanks for stopping by,
Chris
